Tom recently presented an employment law seminar for members of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. The seminar focused on the benefits of having effective employee handbooks. The attendees raised many questions about avoiding liability by implementing a just cause employment policy. Tom pointed out that just cause employment is directly competitive with arbitration offered by union contracts, and assists employers who want to remain union free. Much discussion took place about the concept of employment at will. Tom lectured about how employment at will policies offer very little protection against wrongful discrimination claims, veterans’ rights issues, and more.
